Changing Menu Items

Why should I start changing menu items?

Changing MenuChanging menu items on your physical menu is easy; a little computer work, have them printed, possibly laminate them or insert them into a binding and you’re done.

Changing menu items on your POS is even easier! I know you don’t believe it, and I know that with some POS brands, that’s an outright lie, but not with Digital Dining.

Should I change my menu?

Because our POS can maintain 999,999 menu items, so you can store and activate menu items again and again. You can even automate your system to activate and deactivate menu items on a schedule, and there are some good reasons for changing menu items:

  • Seasonal changes
  • Ease of access
  • Analyze item cost and profit reports
  • Remove unpopular items

Seasonal Changes

With the holidays coming up, there are probably a lot of items made with pumpkin, turkey, cranberries, and peppermint that aren’t usually very popular. You can make it a lot easier and faster to access Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s and New Year’s Resolution menu items easily.

Changing Menu ItemsEase of Access

While you can have seasonal items on your menu at all times, you don’t usually need it on your main ordering window or in your chains of modifiers. By making a few quick changes, you can customize your main ordering window with custom buttons for the seasonal items, and link them to modifier chains that they pair well with. Not only does this make it easier to find and faster to complete orders, but it will make it easier for your servers to upsell menu items that will only be around for a short time.

This is the best practice to do with new menu items as well, to see how well new items will be received. If your servers aren’t pushing new menu items, or even remembering them, you can’t get a real analysis on the popularity of an item.

Customized Reporting

Whether seasonal, new or old menu items, you can run custom reports to get analytical breakdowns of their performance. Is an item being ordered often enough to justify stocking ingredients for it? Are some permanent items only popular at certain times of the year? Custom reports can be run on any item or group of items that you want.

Knowing which items are selling, or how sales are affected by price changes can help you spend less money on unnecessary ingredients and menu items.

Chopping Unpopular Menu Items

It doesn’t matter if a menu item is seasonal or standard if it isn’t selling, it’s costing you money. Unpopular menu items take up space on physical menus, hurt your reputation and take up refrigerator space for ingredients that could be used, or cut down on. Deleting a menu item from your Digital Dining system is easy, and the benefits are far reaching.

Are you making the most of your menu? This time of year, especially, a well-optimized menu can make a big difference in your restaurant’s profitability.
